Coincidiendo con el 250 aniversario de la concesión del título de ciudad a Santander, esta lección inaugural del curso académico 2005/06 de la Universidad de Cantabria propone que, aunque su historia como activo puerto de mar se remonta a la Edad Media, la ciudad actual es producto de la modernización de Europa, iniciada en el siglo XVIII y resultado de la iniciativa emprendedora por parte de sus habitantes.
