La historia del estudio de la gran y rica variedad de las lenguas en México comenzó con las gramáticas y diccionarios elaborados por misioneros católicos desde el siglo xvi, quienes nos heredaron muchas obras todavía valiosas para el presente. En este libro se trata de los estudios lingüísticos sobre lenguas de México (español y lenguas amerindias) a partir de la Independencia. Se busca contribuir con un primer esquema de la historia de la lingüística mexicana, en que se destacan autores, obras y corrientes de pensamiento entre 1810 y el presente.
