Góngora no publicó su obra en vida, aunque lo intentó en 1623. Sus versos se conocieron dispersos en manuscritos o impresos en hojas sueltas. Sólo aparecieron en un libro el año en que murió, en una edición que preparó Juan López de Vicuña con el título de Obras en verso del Homero español (1627). Después Gonzalo de Hoces hizo otra edición de Todas las obras de don Luis de Góngora en varios poemas (1633).
