Resumen del Libro

Libro Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton

Since the recent republication of her novel The Squatter and the Don, Mara Amparo Ruiz de Burton (1832?95) has become a key figure in the recovery of nineteenth-century Mexican American literature. An aristocratic Californiana, she championed the rights of Mexican Americans in novels, plays, and letters. Her 1885 novel called attention to the illegal appropriation of Mexican land by the United States government, and she critiqued the political mores of America after the Civil War in light of the Mexican-American war. Her keen assessment of corporate capitalism at the end of the nineteenth century, frank acknowledgment of feminine desire, and deft insights about economic realities and class relations were unique among her American peers. Using Ruiz de Burton?s work to analyze the critical schism conventionally imposed on nineteenth-century literary culture in America, the essays in this collection also draw connections between her work and the contemporary Chicana and Chicano canons. At once richly historical and critically nuanced, these essays appraise a politically complex Mexican American writer alternately celebrated as marginalized and censured for her identification with a social elite. This volume includes a section on pedagogy that offers a discussion of teaching approaches, syllabi, discussion questions, and assignments.

Libro Nuevos modelos. Cultura, moda y literatura (España 1900-1939)

This volume contains several essays that adopt as a common viewpoint a reflection on the concept of 'new models' that arose in Spanish society in the early twentieth century. The studies cover different aspects of culture - from fashion to literature, from music to law, as well as pedagogy - trying to account, from different perspectives, for the creative ferment of one of the most challenging and changeable periods in Spanish history.--Translation of publisher's description.

Libro El Teatro Cervantes de Alcalá de Henares, 1602-1866

In 1981, on the basis of documentary evidence, the authors identified the site of the first public theatre in Alcala de Henares, dating from the time of Cervantes. The building, which had been most recently in use as a cinema, showed evidence of four periods of dramatic activity: the original corral de comedias, an 18th century horse-shoe amphitheatre, an elliptical amphitheatre of Roman period, and the cinema. Research in archives provided a wealth of documentation up to the 19th century, covering all aspects of theatrical life, from the original contract for the construction of the corral...
