Este segundo volumen de La historiografía chilena 1842 – 1970 presenta a los investigadores que se ocuparon de nuestra historia durante el siglo XX, específicamente entre los años 1920 y 1970. Este tomo destaca la diversificación de las temáticas estudiadas por esta rama de las ciencias sociales, el aumento explosivo de sus publicaciones y la influencia que ejercieron en ella corrientes contemporáneas como el hispanismo, el marxismo y la Escuela de los Annales.

Al cumplirse el centenario del nacimiento de don Marco Fidel Suárez (abril de 1955), la República rindió a su memoria un homenaje fervoroso, que entre otros aspectos estimulantes tuvo el de unir a todos los hijos de la patria en torno a un nombre insigne y en la exaltación de una obra perdurable.
