In this work, the Spanish copulae ser and estar are argued to be aspectual morphemes. Their binary opposition reflects the universal aspectual values ÃÃplus or minus¨Perfective¨, which are the same ones overtly expressed by the preterite and imperfect past tense forms in Spanish.
