El Crotalón es un testimonio de la lectura erasmista del Lazarillo de Tormes. Cristóbal de Villalón consideraba que el Lazarillo contenía el mismo mensaje que los Diálogos de Alfonso de Valdés. Por ello adoptó ese punto de vista en dos cantos del Gallo. No se sabe cuándo fue escrito El Crótalon. La referencia a la segunda parte anónima del Lazarillo, publicado en 1555 en España, no sirve como fecha post quem. Está solo en uno de los dos Manuscritos que nos han transmitido la obra —con la versión ampliada—. Pudo, por tanto, ser una adición posterior.
