En Apoteosis de don Pedro Calderón de la Barca, José Zorrilla hace una apología a la hispanidad y al orgullo herido de un imperio que dio sus últimos estertores en el siglo XIX. El texto resulta interesante, incluso desde su idea épica de una estructura nacional, y merece un análisis más centrado en lo político que en la noción de "divertimento literario" con que fue concebido originalmente. Cabe concluir comentando que aquí la figura de Calderón de la Barca es presentada como un estandarte nacional, una reivindicación de ese orgullo imperial antes referido.
