This commentary delves into the fascinating world of the Old Testament to teach about its protagonists: their struggles, temptations, and their faith in God. Grouping the psalms into categories, the author analyses their historical background and their application to the life of Christians today. Dr. Blank makes it clear that the Psalms, apart from being an expression of the Israelites' faith, also point clearly to Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd of God's people. In his analysis, the author examines two modern currents of thought in the interpretation of the Psalms. The first investigates the parallels that the Psalms seem to have with sacred songs of the Israelites' neighboring tribes. These studies shed new light on many themes contained in historical books of the Old Testament: holy war, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Davidic monarchy, among others. The second current emphasizes the relationship that each psalm has with the other psalms in the canon. According to this interpretation, the whole book of Psalms has an eschatological and messianic orientation; and this messianic orientation was one of the reasons for its canonization.
