No se sabe cuándo fue escrito el Crótalon. La referencia a la segunda parte anónima del Lazarillo, publicado en 1555 en España, no sirve como fecha post quem porque está sólo en uno de los dos manuscritos que nos han transmitido la obra –con la versión ampliada– y pudo, por tanto, ser una adición posterior. El crótalon es un testimonio de la lectura erasmista de La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes. Cristóbal de Villalón consideraba que el Lazarillo contenía el mismo mensaje que los Diálogos de Alfonso de Valdés y adoptó ese punto de vista en dos cantos del Gallo.
