Lord Rump and his granddaughter Duckling need a disposable boy and a farm boy named Pummel is perfect for the job. Duckling is willing to help because her grandfather promised her it would be the last time. Both kids end up in Berren, a strong-hold where time has stopped. They soon find themselves embroiled in a conspiracy against the heir to the Faithful Throne. If they want to save the Young Margrave and escape a horrible death, they will have to use magic that no one believes in.
